The newspaper industry is suffering. That’s bad news for journalists — both real and fictional.

  4. I paid for the internet, I paid for the article. It ain't free. I'm not paying for it 2x. The papers should come after the ISPs for revenue.
What's crazy, is that the papers are probably being paid by the ISPs. This means, if the paper is asking you to pay for their service, then they're getting paid 2x.

  5. Former journalist here. I don't know about the United States, but in Canada, the job of reporting the news is dissected into tiny, little tasks so that the corporation can retain control over the message and no individual can exercise any editorial control over the piece. For instance, the on-air persona is just a guy that reads the script. The script is written by a script writer. The interviews in the report are performed each by different people. The whole thing is produced by someone else. That producer is told exactly what to report and how to report it by her/his boss. And any one person can step out of line and get fired and the gaps get filled in so the package makes it on the air. Then you get overtly neoliberal bias to suit the business interests of the corporation that produces the news. I can't work in broadcast news anymore because it's just so disgusting.

  6. Maybe I’d have to be in the industry to understand, but it really seems like relying on automated systems to provide context or evidence would only increase the amount of time spent vetting information acquired by algorithm. Those systems are still in their infancy, and thus prone to error.

  7. With Ted Lasso now being a whole show of it's own, among other things thank to Jason Sudeikis, I think Stoplight has a real shot at becoming feature length as well!

  8. Can't help but think of when Bloomberg was running for president in 2019 while rewatching this. As not only does he own a huge journalism company but is super wealthy. Not only that but I assume anybody covering the election or politics at the time felt compelled to cover Bloomberg in a very positive light

  9. It really annoys me how journalism has become a punchline among loud idiots and the uninformed people who agree with loud idiots

Under a separate Last Week Tonight video, someone basically said “when comedians are the real journalists lol”

Not realizing that this show relies heavily on the hard work of journalists. Fuck

  10. Yes, let's talk about a problem, criticize anything that remotely approaches a solution without offering any of our own. And no, asking people to pay for shit isn't a solution, solutions are things that have at least some chance of working.

I do have a potential idea. Change copyright laws so that anything that is made in the last one month are strictly protected, no fair use whatsoever. This will protect actual original source journalism by making every secondary source ones, be it aggravator sites or youtubers pay the license fee they should. Does it have its own problems? Of course, there probably needs to be various carve outs for various purposes. But at least this would be systematic and have a chance to succeed over you essentially pleading people to do the right thing, which they won't.

  11. Anyone here from 2021 who watched the end sketch and immediately thought of Ben Urich from the Daredevil series going through a similar arc where he is confronted by Ellison (his boss) because organised crime and corruption doesn't sell papers?
